Navjeet K. Bal

Commissioner, Massachusetts Department of Revenue

Navjeet K. Bal, was appointed as the Commissioner of Revenue for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in early February 2008. She is responsible for overseeing the Department of Revenue’s approximately 2200 employees in offices across the state that work in its Tax Administration division, its Child Support Enforcement division and its Municipal Finance division.

Ms. Bal is an attorney by profession, and practiced in the Public Finance section of Mintz Levin in Boston for seventeen years. As a Public Finance attorney, Ms. Bal worked with the Commonwealth, and many state agencies, in the issuance of tax-exempt bonds for capital projects across the state. Ms. Bal received her B.A. from Williams College and her J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law.

While at Mintz Levin, Ms. Bal co-founded the firm’s Domestic Violence Project, directed several other pro bono projects and served on the firm’s Pro Bono committee. Ms. Bal is currently a board member of and former chairperson of the Legal Advocacy and Resource Center in Boston, Massachusetts, a legal services hotline center. She also served on a statewide commission under retired Chief Justice Herbert Wilkins which restructured the delivery of legal services in Massachusetts. Ms. Bal is on the South Asian Bar Association of Greater Boston Advisory Board, and was a recipient of the National South Asian Bar Association Cornerstone Award in 2008.
